Flow measurement is an important aspect of many operations in the water industry. Abstraction of water from rivers, dosing during purification, metering into supply, metering to customers and discharges of waste water back into rivers all require metering. The reasons vary (quality control, revenue, environmental regulation ), the required precision may vary (<1% for quality, up to 10% for environmental regulation) but the need for a proper understanding of the metering process remains central to the efficient provision of clean water and the safe disposal of waste.
The many and diverse metering applications within the industry call for a wide range of metering technologies; electromagnetic meters may dominate the trunk main distribution system but differential-pressure meters remain common and open-channel metering is the standard in waste water discharge.
Typical agriculture applications include: optimisation of water usage; irrigation water measurement; flow measurements in chlorination; monitoring discharge volumes of waste water from either rinse water or process waste; net fuel usage in plant and engines; dosage of additives such as fertilizers & pesticides.
