What is a Coriolis Mass Flow Meter?
A Coriolis mass flow meter is a type of flow meter used to measure the mass and volumetric flow rate of liquids or gases in a pipe. It operates on the principle of the Coriolis effect, which is the deflection caused by the rotation of the Earth.
A typical Coriolis mass flow meter consists of a vibrating tube or tubes through which the fluid flows, there are a number of different shapes and designs for these. As the fluid passes through the tubes, which are oscillated at high frequency by the driver coils it causes a vibration in the tubes.
The Coriolis effect causes the tubes to twist in a specific manner, which is directly proportional to the mass flow rate of the fluid. By measuring the tube movement and vibrations, the Coriolis mass flow meter can accurately determine the mass flow rate of the fluid.
One of the advantages of Coriolis mass flow meters is their ability to measure both mass flow rate and density of the fluid simultaneously. This makes them versatile instruments used in various industries, including oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and chemical processing. They are particularly useful in applications where accurate measurement of mass flow is critical.
